Music, made patiently.

Hello! I'm Madison VanScoder — concert pianist, instructor, and lifelong student of the instrument. I've been at the piano since I was four years old, and with over a decade of experience in music education and performance, I founded Madison 88 Piano Studio to bring personalized, classically-grounded piano instruction to students of every age and stage.

My teaching draws on extensive classical training, jazz studies at Berklee College of Music, and a study programme at The Music Institute of Copenhagen. I'm a registered Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) teacher and a Steinway-affiliated instructor through Steinway Piano Gallery of Ohio. While piano is my heart and specialty, my background also spans voice, cello, and accompaniment — so I bring a well-rounded musicianship to every lesson. I specialize in music theory, composition, and piano technique — but more than anything, I'm passionate about cultivating a lifelong love for the art and meeting each student exactly where they are.

Lessons take place in my home studio in Stark County, Ohio, or in your home for students within 15 miles. A small travel fee applies for in-home lessons beyond 15 miles. I also offer virtual lessons over video — perfect for students with busy schedules, those outside my travel area, or anyone who prefers learning from their own piano at home.

Performance opportunities.

Music is meant to be shared. My students have meaningful chances to perform, prepare for competitions, and collaborate with other musicians throughout the year.

🎼

Studio Recitals

All students are invited to perform in our biannual studio recitals — one in winter and one in summer. Recitals are a chance to celebrate progress, share music with family and friends, and build confidence on stage in a warm, supportive setting.

OMEA Solo & Ensemble

For students who want to take their playing further, I offer dedicated preparation for the Ohio Music Education Association Solo & Ensemble Adjudicated Event. We'll select appropriate repertoire, refine technique and musicality, and prepare you to perform with confidence.

Good to know.

The questions I'm asked most often — by parents, adult learners, and curious first-timers.

I generally start students at age 5 or 6, when they can sit comfortably at the piano and follow simple direction. That said, every child is different — some are ready a little earlier, some a little later. For very young beginners, a 15-minute lesson is often the perfect introduction.
Absolutely not — adult beginners are some of my most rewarding students. You bring focus, patience, and a clear sense of why you're here. Whether you're starting from zero or returning after decades away, we'll meet you exactly where you are and build from there.
Yes — consistent practice between lessons is essential. A full 88-key weighted keyboard is a great starting point if a traditional acoustic piano isn't feasible. I'm happy to advise on instrument options that fit your space and budget.
I have access to multiple sheet music libraries and can print materials for students as we go, so much of what we use is provided. For certain method books or longer-term repertoire, families may be asked to purchase a book or two — I'll always let you know in advance and recommend exactly what's needed.
Quality matters more than quantity. Young beginners might practice 10–15 minutes a day, intermediate students 20–30, and advanced students 45+ — but daily consistency beats long, sporadic sessions every time. We'll set realistic goals together based on your level and lifestyle.
My foundation is classical, with extensive jazz training from Berklee. But I believe in teaching the music that excites my students — pop, film scores, jazz standards, contemporary, hymns, whatever lights you up. A strong classical foundation makes every other style easier to play.
Lessons are billed monthly, with payment due by the 1st of each month. I accept Venmo, Zelle, and PayPal — see the Payment section for handles and details.
Life happens — I just ask for at least 24 hours notice when possible so I can adjust my schedule. We'll discuss makeup lessons and policies for illness, travel, or unexpected conflicts when you enroll.
Yes! Madison 88 hosts two studio recitals each year — one in winter and one in summer — and all students are welcome to perform. I also prepare students for OMEA Solo & Ensemble, school auditions, and formal piano examinations. Performance experience builds confidence in a way nothing else can.
Virtual lessons happen over video call from your piano at home. They work beautifully for students of any age — the only requirements are a stable internet connection, a device with a camera, and a piano or keyboard. Many students prefer them for the comfort and zero commute time.
